At its worst, depression is severe depression. Too many Americans will not seek help for this disorder until it is so severe that it takes years to bring under control. Depression of sime type afflicts 15 million people in the USA annually. Medical attention will only be sought by about 4.5 million of these people. It seems that the age-old stereotypes that are associated with any mental illness leads these individuals to conceal their affliction and try to wish it away. But there’s no good fairy to magic away severe depression. Those who suffer this disease have no control over it and the condition will only get worse with time.

Many sufferers won’t admit they show the signs of this condition. Severe depression does not make you sub-human. You’re still a full person. Like heart disease or cancer, depression is an illness. It requires treatment and support. When it becomes severe depression the symptoms become even worse. Everything associated with the illness becomes more intense. It becomes harder to deal with every day situations. You’ll be pulled deeper into yourself by feelings of hopelessness. This illness cannot be prevented. However, it can be treated. It’s vital to detect it early.

It takes some skill to diagnose depression from its symptoms. Depression is associated with many symptoms. A transparent one is that the sufferer will withdraw into themselves. Dealing with other people becomes too difficult. They cannot overcome their feelings of guilt, hopelessness and uselessness. They are constantly agitated and irritable. In the severest of cases those suffering from this disease may feel that they hear voices or believe they have received visits from the devil. Suicide often becomes a way out for victims of severe depression. Those affected by this illness need the support of those around them and treatment that will give them confidence once again.

One of the most horrific illnesses is severe depression. Normal life is no longer possible. Losing the ability to control your own life is terrible. Treatment is the only option. The weapons of choice in the fight against depression are anti-depressants and talk therapy. Support groups can also help. Treatment starts the process of recovery for people. They can once again gain the self-control they once had. To reach that point one must first face their illness and pursue solutions.
