Migraine over the counter medication can be a very effective way of easing blinding migraine pain, provided that you take it at the right time. You need to take migraine over the counter medication as soon as you feel the warning signs of a migraine. Otherwise, you’re in trouble. You can try to take the migraine over the counter medication once the migraine begins to roar, but you will most likely just too the pills back up again.
Get To Know Your Nervous System
On the PBS medical series “Second Opinion”, experts on treating migraine recommended that migraineurs (that’s the technical name for a person suffering from migraines) needs to get to know their nervous systems. This is because your body gives clear warning signs that a migraine is on the way but you do have to pay attention to those warning signs.
Unfortunately, these warning signs can differ from person to person. For some, they get suddenly and extremely irritable. For others, they get auras, where they see flashes or visual hallucinations about fifteen minutes prior to pain. Some people get suddenly amazingly sensitive to sounds, light and even tastes. Some people get a tell-tale pressure behind one eye. This is their cue to immediately down some migraine over the counter medication.
Keep Track Of Your Caffeine Intake
One of the triggers for migraines is caffeine withdrawal. This is one reason why caffeine is often an ingredient in much migraine over the counter medications like Execedrin Migraine in America and Panadol Extra in the UK. If you do get migraines from caffeine withdrawal, you need to cut back on your total caffeine consumption. Although this leads to very painful side effects, they do end after a few days.
Some people advocate going “cold turkey” on caffeine, but this writer does not recommend it, as it’s so incredibly painful. I’ve compromised, instead, by cutting back drastically on my caffeine. However, I am currently still caffeine-dependent (I need a cup of tea every twenty hours, or I get a migraine).
One way to discover your migraine triggers is to keep a migraine journal. There are free online programs to help you with this. Over time, you see a pattern of when you can predict a migraine will occur. Then, you just avoid those triggers and keep the migraine over the counter medication as a life preserver. Still, you have to go see your doctor about your migraines.
